“The good news about computers is that they do what you tell them to do. The bad news is that they do what you tell them to do.”
— Ted Nelson
Simulated intelligence has been a staple of science fiction since the genre was invented. Now it’s here — or something close enough to make the business world frantic about what it promises.
Companies rushing to deploy large language models are running headfirst into that old adage. The hard part isn’t the technology. It’s that most organizations can’t enumerate what they actually need solved — and an LLM will not figure that out for you.
That’s where I come in. During a decade at Oliver Wyman’s Actuarial Practice, I excelled at architecting models, decoding tangled workflows, and diving headfirst into the mathematical details that most people’s eyes glaze over. I took special delight in the problems that didn’t have a playbook — combination products, multi-year embedded engagements, transactions where the assumptions mattered more than the model. I’d rather build something useful than present a deck about building something useful. The skill that made me an unusual consultant — compulsively questioning why we’re solving what we’re solving before touching the how — is exactly what steering these tools demands. MooseGoose Consulting works at that intersection: actuarial domain expertise, practical AI adoption, and the layer of reasoning that most implementations skip.
